Today the students were suppose to know how to get their projects started and either bring in the starting object or make it class today. Pretty much then go from their with their project. A lot of people didn’t show probably because they weren’t ready with supplies or didn’t want to deal with it. And then there were the people who showed and didn’t have anything ready. So there was weird chaos going on. Everyone is doing different things to start making their projects some people are going over ideas and sketches while others are banging sawing and being loud. It was chaotic.

Last class Trey had discussed the next project. Which is something that can be an extension of yourself and it has to be wearable. So today we pushed all the tables together to make a massive table and everyone shared their ideas. We talked about how we could make these ideas realistic by saying how you could build it and what materials you could use. At the end of everyone’s ideas we discussed possible starting points for what materials you would need to get the piece going.

President’s Day. No class. On Wednesday we will finish critique and jump into the next project.

Critique day. Trey spoke at the beginning of class saying that he was going to try and not talk so much or have me talk too much. He knows that we both can talk about their art all day but the goal is to get them talking about it. To get them comfortable to talk about strong and weak points of the art. So for the most part we let them guide the critique.

Projects were suppose to be due today, but at the end of last class Trey decided to push the due date another week. So today was another work day. Projects are starting to take their shape.

Another work day. Trey and I just wondered the class watching and waiting for people to ask for help. It’s interesting to see what people struggle with because it is never the exact same thing. Some people might have similar issues but the issue is always a little more tailored for each person it seems.

I was sick so did not go to class. It was just a work day though.

Trey gave a welding demo to Sculpture I as to prepare them for their first project. He stuck to simple metal that was easy to work in a variety of ways. He emphasized the safety equipment to wear, no synthetic fibers, closed toe’d shoes, jeans or a thick material like so, and welding gear (mask, gloves, jacket). He also emphasized and harped on knowing how to use the equipment. “Even if I just told you how to do it and you immediately forgot or were unsure. Just ask me or Austin again. We’re here to help and would rather you be unsure. If you’re unsure just stop and come get one of us” A quote Trey said. He wants a strong grasp on how to use the tools for safety reasons and best execution of tools, and in the long run a better piece for the student.
